What the execution classes mean
EN 1090-2 sorts steel structures into four execution classes according to the consequences of failure and the type of loading. EXC1 covers low-consequence work such as temporary or minor agricultural structures. EXC2 is the default for ordinary building structures. EXC3 applies where failure would be serious, or where the structure carries fatigue loading — bridges, cranes, key public buildings. EXC4 is reserved for structures with extreme consequences.
Each step up tightens the requirements: more comprehensive welding quality management under the ISO 3834 series, wider-scope welder and welding procedure qualification, more non-destructive testing, and deeper material and weld traceability. MetARS is certified for EXC1, EXC2 and EXC3, which covers load-bearing structural work that fabricators holding only EXC2 cannot take on.
